Aoi Wanatabe is a female potter from Akita, Northern part of Japan with lots of snow in winter. Akita is also famous for rice fields, and Aoi uses ashes from rice husk to make beautiful blue glaze called Namako-yu. She uses a kerosene kiln and fires in specific way to have color blue. If condition inside the kiln changes, it turns out to be a different color.
Though her style of pottery is considered to be Mingei, Japanese word for traditional folk art, she tries new approach to that and makes mixture of tradition and modern art.
